Water Gauge Camp, Macalister River

★★★★☆ (4.8/5) – A remote 4WD riverside camp.
Water Gauge Camp is a classic, remote bush campsite for the self-sufficient 4WD enthusiast seeking solitude along the iconic Macalister River in Victoria’s High Country. Located deep in the state forest north of Licola, this free campground is one of several small clearings that line the rugged Macalister River Road. Reaching it is an adventure in itself, requiring a capable 4WD to navigate the unsealed track, which includes several river crossings that can become deep and fast-flowing, particularly after rain. The campsite is a simple, natural clearing on the riverbank, offering a beautifully isolated setting amongst the towering eucalypts and the sound of the rushing river. This is a primitive campsite in the truest sense, offering an unfiltered connection with nature. There are absolutely no facilities on site – no toilets, no water, and no bins. Campers must be completely prepared to be self-reliant, carrying in all their own supplies, including a portable toilet system and enough water for their entire stay. A strict ‘leave no trace’ ethic is crucial to preserve the pristine environment of the river valley. As a state forest campsite, dogs are permitted, making it a great option for those who explore with their four-legged friends. The Macalister River is the main attraction, providing opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and a refreshing (though often chilly) swim. The surrounding area is a maze of challenging 4WD tracks waiting to be explored. Fires are generally permitted in existing pits subject to seasonal fire bans, but you must bring your own firewood. For those with the right vehicle and a spirit for adventure, Water Gauge Camp offers a rewarding and beautifully secluded High Country experience.
