The Basin Campground – Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park

The Basin campground offers one of the most unique and sought-after camping experiences in New South Wales, providing a complete bush and beach escape that feels a world away from nearby Sydney. Located in the stunning Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, this beautiful campground is uniquely accessible only by water or a challenging hike. Most visitors opt for the scenic ferry ride from Palm Beach, an adventure that sets the tone for the special getaway to come. Upon arrival, you are greeted by a huge, idyllic grassy clearing that slopes gently down to the shores of Pittwater. This vast space is a designated tent-only area, famous for its resident swamp wallabies, kangaroos, and impressively large goannas that roam freely amongst the campers.

The main attraction is the tranquil, netted swimming lagoon, which offers safe and calm waters perfect for families and children to swim and splash. The clear waters of Pittwater are also ideal for snorkelling, stand-up paddleboarding, and kayaking, with hire available during peak periods. For hikers, a number of trails lead out from The Basin, including a fascinating walk to ancient Aboriginal rock engravings. The facilities are excellent for a remote campground, with well-maintained toilet blocks offering cold showers, plus numerous gas barbecues and picnic shelters. As a vehicle-free environment, you must carry all your gear in from the wharf, but the reward is a peaceful and immersive nature experience. Bookings are absolutely essential, often far in advance, a testament to its popularity. For an unforgettable family adventure or a romantic nature retreat, The Basin is a true Sydney treasure.
