Shaws Flat Camping Area – Secluded Bush Camping on the Mighty Murray River

Shaws Flat Camping Area (River Murray Reserve)

Secluded Bush Camping on the Mighty Murray River

Escape to the tranquility of the Murray River at Shaws Flat Camping Area, a stunning dispersed bush camping reserve located just north of the historic wine town of Rutherglen. This site is a hidden gem for self-sufficient campers looking to disconnect from the hustle and bustle and reconnect with nature. Nestled amongst majestic river red gums, Shaws Flat offers a true bush experience with direct access to the water, making it a paradise for anglers, kayakers, and birdwatchers.

As a free camping area managed by Parks Victoria, Shaws Flat is popular for its spacious, unallocated sites that stretch along the riverbank. There are no designated bays, allowing you to find your own perfect slice of river frontage to set up your swag, tent, or off-road caravan. The atmosphere is peaceful and relaxed, with the sounds of the river and native wildlife providing the perfect soundtrack to your stay. It is an excellent base for exploring the nearby Rutherglen wine region during the day and returning to a roaring campfire under the stars at night.

It is important to note that Shaws Flat is a “bush camp” in the truest sense. There are absolutely no facilities on-site—no toilets, no showers, and no running water. Visitors must be completely self-contained and practice “leave no trace” principles to preserve this beautiful environment. Access is via unsealed tracks which can be prone to flooding or becoming boggy after rain, so dry weather access is highly recommended.

Whether you’re launching a tinny from the natural bank to chase a Murray Cod, enjoying a refreshing swim on a hot summer’s day, or simply sitting back with a glass of local Durif by the fire, Shaws Flat offers an authentic and cost-free Murray River camping experience. Just a short drive from the amenities of Rutherglen and Corowa, you are never too far from a good coffee or a counter meal, offering the perfect balance of isolation and convenience.
