Running Creek Camping Reserve, Howqua

★★★★☆ (4.6/5)
Great remote spot for 4WD enthusiasts.
For those seeking a more secluded and adventurous camping experience in the Victorian High Country, Running Creek Camping Reserve offers a fantastic free option away from the more crowded sites. Situated on the beautiful Howqua River, this state forest campground provides an authentic bush setting that rewards those willing to venture a little further off the beaten path. Access is typically recommended for 4WD vehicles, especially after rain, as the tracks can become challenging. The campsite itself is a lovely, natural clearing on the riverbank, surrounded by towering gum trees and dense forest, offering a true sense of immersion in nature. It’s a peaceful spot, perfect for unwinding to the sounds of the river and the abundant birdlife. As a basic bush camp, facilities are minimal, with a single non-flush toilet being the only provided amenity. This means campers must be fully self-sufficient, carrying in all their own supplies, including drinking water, and diligently packing out all rubbish to maintain the area’s pristine condition. The reserve is pet-friendly, so dogs can join in the adventure. The Howqua River is the centerpiece of the experience here, offering excellent opportunities for trout fishing, kayaking, and cooling off in the crystal-clear water on a hot summer’s day. Open fires are generally permitted in existing pits, but it’s essential to be aware of all fire regulations and Total Fire Ban days, and to bring your own firewood. Due to its more challenging access, Running Creek is often quieter than other nearby reserves, making it an ideal choice for experienced campers looking for solitude and a genuine connection with the rugged beauty of the Howqua Valley.
