Platypus Flat campground, Wild Cattle Creek NSW

For a truly magical wilderness escape, Platypus Flat campground is a spectacular destination nestled deep within the World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests of the Nymboi-Binderay National Park. As its name suggests, this beautiful campground is one of the best places in Australia to spot the elusive platypus in its natural habitat. Set on a large, grassy clearing right on the banks of the pristine Nymboida River, it offers a serene and immersive back-to-nature experience. The journey into the camp along unsealed forest roads is part of the adventure, delivering you to a tranquil haven surrounded by towering old-growth forest and the soothing sounds of the river.

This is a classic National Parks bush camp, perfect for self-sufficient travellers. The facilities are basic but well-maintained, with pit toilets, picnic tables, and wood barbecues provided. Campers must come prepared, bringing all their own drinking water and taking their rubbish home. The campground is a paradise for water lovers. The river features deep, clear swimming holes perfect for a refreshing dip, and its gentle currents are ideal for liloing or kayaking. Anglers are also drawn to the area, trying their luck for Eastern freshwater cod and bass.

The main event, of course, is the platypus. The best time to spot these shy creatures is at dawn or dusk, sitting quietly by the river’s edge. The campground’s peaceful atmosphere is perfect for this patient wildlife watching. The surrounding park is also a haven for other animals, including kangaroos, wallabies, and an incredible diversity of birdlife. While it feels a world away, the charming mountain town of Dorrigo is the nearest hub for supplies. For a unique and unforgettable encounter with one of Australia’s most iconic animals in a breathtaking setting, Platypus Flat is a top-tier destination. Bookings are essential.
