Old Kowen Homestead Camping Area, Kowen ACT

For a unique and rustic bush camping experience with a special focus on equestrian activities, the Old Kowen Homestead camping area is a true hidden gem. Tucked away within the vast expanse of the Kowen Forest, the largest pine plantation in the ACT, this campground offers a peaceful escape that feels worlds away from the nearby city of Canberra. This is not a typical tourist park; it is a primitive, self-sufficient campground managed by the ACT Horse Trail Riders Inc., primarily serving as a base for riders to explore the 80 kilometres of marked trails that wind through the forest. However, it is also open to non-equestrian campers who appreciate a back-to-basics, nature-based getaway.

The campground is set in a large, open, grassy clearing, providing a serene and spacious environment. The atmosphere is quiet and laid-back, centred around the historic remnants and grounds of the Old Kowen Homestead. The facilities are basic, designed for the self-reliant camper. There is a non-flushing toilet and non-potable water available for stock and washing, but you must bring all your own drinking water and take all rubbish home with you. For horse riders, the facilities are excellent, with numerous horse yards, a mounting block, and direct access to the signposted trail network. The freedom to ride out directly from your campsite is a major drawcard.

Even for those without horses, the camp offers a tranquil retreat. It’s a place to enjoy the silence of the pine forest, the spectacular starry nights, and the warmth of a campfire (when conditions permit). The area is rich in wildlife, including kangaroos and a variety of birds. Its location, while feeling remote, is surprisingly close to Canberra’s northern suburbs and Queanbeyan, making it easy to access supplies. For a simple, affordable, and peaceful bush camp, especially for those with horses, Old Kowen Homestead is an outstanding choice. Bookings are essential and made through the managing association.
