Emu Lake campground, Menindee NSW
For an outback camping experience that is rich in wildlife, history, and breathtaking scenery, Emu Lake campground is an extraordinary destination. Located in the magnificent Kinchega National Park, this beautiful campground is perched on the banks of the ephemeral Emu Lake, a vast, shallow lakebed that transforms into a teeming wetland oasis after rain. It’s a place of profound peace and natural wonder, offering self-sufficient campers a front-row seat to the spectacular theatre of the outback. The campground provides spacious, informal sites spread out amongst the river red gums and black box trees, many with panoramic views across the lake.
This is a classic National Parks bush camp where the environment is the star. When the lake holds water, it becomes a haven for an astonishing array of birdlife, attracting thousands of waterbirds including pelicans, swans, and cormorants, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and photographers. Even when dry, the vast plains are frequented by large mobs of kangaroos, emus, and other wildlife. The facilities are basic but well-maintained, with pit toilets and wood barbecues provided. Self-reliance is essential; you must bring your own drinking water and firewood, and pack out all your rubbish.
The campground’s location is superb for exploring the treasures of Kinchega. It is just a short drive from the magnificently preserved Kinchega Woolshed, a must-see piece of Australian pastoral history. It’s also close to the Darling River, offering opportunities for fishing and kayaking. The nearby town of Menindee, the first town on the Darling River, provides access to the vast Menindee Lakes scheme and a taste of outback town life. For a truly memorable and immersive outback adventure, especially for bird lovers, Emu Lake campground is a world-class choice. Bookings are essential.
