Edward River Bridge campground, Mathoura NSW

The Edward River Bridge campground is a legendary free camp and a quintessential Riverina experience, beloved by travellers for its stunning location and peaceful atmosphere. Set in a magnificent forest of river red gums on the banks of the beautiful Edward River, this spacious campground offers a perfect escape for self-sufficient campers. Located between the towns of Mathoura and Deniliquin, it provides numerous informal campsites spread out along the river, allowing visitors to find their own private slice of paradise. It’s a place where you can set up your camp, cast a line from the riverbank, and simply watch the incredible birdlife, including pelicans, cockatoos, and kingfishers.

This is a classic bush camp where self-reliance is key. There are no facilities here—no toilets, no bins, and no tap water—so it is strictly for those who are fully self-contained and committed to the ‘leave no trace’ principle of taking all rubbish with them. This ensures the pristine environment is preserved for all to enjoy. The campground is famously pet-friendly, making it an ideal destination for those travelling with their dogs, who will love the open spaces and the opportunity for a river swim. Evenings are a highlight, with the setting sun filtering through the majestic gums and the opportunity for a campfire (when restrictions permit) creating a magical outback atmosphere.

The main attraction is the river itself, which is renowned for its excellent fishing, with Murray Cod and Golden Perch being the ultimate prize. It’s also perfect for kayaking and canoeing. While it feels wonderfully remote, the campground is just a short drive from the vibrant town of Deniliquin, making it a convenient base for stocking up on supplies or exploring local attractions like the famous Deni Ute on a Pole. For a free, beautiful, and authentic Murray-Darling Basin experience, this campground is one of the best.
