The star attraction is the river itself; its clear waters offer idyllic deep pools for swimming, and the gentle flow in many sections is perfect for launching a kayak or canoe to explore the winding waterway. Anglers will relish the chance to cast a line for bass and other freshwater species. The campground provides a vast area with plenty of shady spots under the trees, accommodating everything from tents and swags to camper trailers and caravans with ease. Being a remote bush camp, facilities are basic but well-maintained, including non-flush toilets, picnic tables, and wood barbecues. Campers must be fully self-contained, bringing their own drinking water, firewood, and all other essential supplies. As part of the ‘leave no trace’ philosophy, all rubbish must be taken with you. Access to Doon Goonge is via unsealed forestry roads, which are generally manageable for 2WD vehicles in dry conditions, but a 4WD is recommended to provide better clearance and handling on the gravel surfaces. The journey in is part of the adventure, taking you through stunning eucalypt forests teeming with birdlife and other native fauna.
