Corfield Free Camp – Corfield QLD

The Corfield Free Camp embodies the spirit of outback hospitality, offering travellers a convenient and atmospheric place to rest right in the heart of Queensland’s dinosaur country. Located on the Kennedy Developmental Road between Winton and Hughenden, this campground is essentially the large, open, and dusty paddock right next to the iconic Corfield Pub. Its simplicity is its charm. This is a no-frills, self-contained camping area where rigs of all sizes can pull in, find a reasonably level spot, and settle in for the night. The ground is dirt and gravel, so it can get dusty in the dry and potentially boggy after heavy rain, but its size ensures there’s always plenty of room for everyone. The real highlight of staying here is the social atmosphere and the proximity to the pub, which serves as the town’s central hub. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a cold beer, a hearty pub meal, and a yarn with fellow travellers and the few friendly locals who call this tiny settlement home.

While the camp itself is basic, the pub provides access to toilets for patrons, and there are public toilets available. Campers must be self-sufficient with their own power and water. Corfield truly comes alive each year for the Corfield Races, a massive event that sees the population swell and the campground packed to the brim. Outside of race time, it’s a peaceful stopover. The location makes it an ideal staging point for exploring the region. It’s just over an hour’s drive to Winton, the home of the Waltzing Matilda Centre and the Australian Age of Dinosaurs museum, and a similar distance to Hughenden on the Overlanders Way. For travellers looking for an authentic, friendly, and free place to break their journey, the Corfield Free Camp offers a memorable outback experience where the beer is cold and the stars are bright.
