Cockatoo Creek – Cape York QLD Free Camp

Cockatoo Creek is a classic Cape York bush camp, representing the raw, untamed beauty of the peninsula. Situated north of the Archer River, this free campground is strategically located for those venturing onto the iconic Old Telegraph Track (OTT). For many 4WD enthusiasts, it serves as the final, crucial staging point before committing to the southern section of the OTT, offering a chance to make final checks and take a deep breath before the challenges ahead. The campsite is a large, sandy clearing nestled alongside the creek itself, surrounded by sparse woodland. There are no designated sites; it’s a matter of finding a level spot to pull up, making it a social hub where travellers share tips, track conditions, and stories from the road. The creek, with its sandy bottom and clear, flowing water, is the centerpiece of the camp and provides a refreshing, albeit crocodile-aware, opportunity to cool off from the tropical heat.

This is a completely self-sufficient camping experience. There are absolutely no facilities at Cockatoo Creek—no toilets, no water, no showers, and no rubbish bins. Campers must bring in everything they need for their stay and, most importantly, take every single piece of rubbish out with them. This ‘leave no trace’ principle is vital to preserving the pristine nature of such remote locations. Access requires a 4WD, as the tracks can be sandy and corrugated. The creek crossing itself can vary in depth depending on the time of year and recent rainfall, adding to the sense of adventure. It’s a place to disconnect from the modern world and immerse yourself in the wilderness. The nights are dark, perfect for stargazing, and the sounds of the bush provide a natural soundtrack. Cockatoo Creek isn’t about comfort; it’s about the authentic Cape York experience.
