Burke & Wills Campsite, Menindee NSW
Camping on the banks of the Darling River at the Burke and Wills campground is to immerse yourself in the very fabric of Australian exploration history and outback legend. Located within the magnificent Kinchega National Park, this stunning campground is situated at the exact spot where the ill-fated explorers made their 34th camp on their journey north in 1860. The sense of history is palpable, but it’s the spectacular natural beauty that truly captivates visitors. The campground offers numerous spacious, informal sites spread out beneath the shade of majestic river red gums, providing a serene and picturesque base right on the water’s edge. It is a paradise for self-sufficient campers seeking a true outback river experience.
This is a classic National Parks bush camp where the environment is the star attraction. The facilities are basic but well-maintained, consisting of pit toilets and wood barbecue pits. Self-reliance is essential, as you must bring all your own drinking water and firewood, and pack out all your rubbish. The reward is an unforgettable stay in a landscape teeming with life. The birdwatching here is simply world-class, with huge flocks of pelicans, spoonbills, and cormorants often seen on the river, while emus and kangaroos are constant companions in the campground. The sunsets are legendary, setting the river and the sky ablaze with colour.
The location is a fantastic base for exploring the rich history and natural wonders of Kinchega National Park. It’s a short drive to the historic Kinchega Woolshed, a beautifully preserved piece of Australia’s pastoral heritage. The campground is also perfectly positioned for fishing and kayaking on the Darling River. The nearby town of Menindee provides access to the famous Menindee Lakes scheme and a classic outback pub experience. For a deeply rewarding and beautiful outback adventure, the Burke and Wills campground is an unmissable destination. Bookings are essential.
