Dalmorton Campground | Free Camping in a Historic Gold Town

Camp amongst the ghosts of the gold rush at Dalmorton Campground, a fascinating and scenic free camping area set within the historic, semi-abandoned township of Dalmorton. Situated on the serene banks of the beautiful Boyd River, this unique site offers more than just a place to rest; it’s a journey back in time. The campground itself is a large, flat, grassy expanse, providing plenty of space for all types of setups, from tents and swags to large caravans and motorhomes. Once a bustling town with 13 pubs and a population of thousands during the 1870s gold boom, Dalmorton is now a quiet relic of its former glory. As you set up camp, you can explore the surrounding area to discover remnants of the past, including an old butcher’s shop, graveyard, and scattered foundations, all whispering stories of a bygone era. The Boyd River is the campground’s natural centrepiece, offering fantastic opportunities for swimming in its clear, refreshing waters, kayaking, or trying your luck fishing for bass. The sounds of the river and the abundant birdlife create a peaceful atmosphere perfect for relaxation. Facilities are basic, consisting of long-drop toilets and picnic tables, meaning campers must be largely self-sufficient, bringing their own drinking water and supplies. The area is pet-friendly, so your four-legged friends can join the adventure. Access is via the unsealed Chaelundi Road, which is generally suitable for 2WD vehicles in dry conditions, but a 4WD provides greater peace of mind, especially if exploring the surrounding forestry trails. Dalmorton is the perfect base for exploring the wider Guy Fawkes River State Conservation Area and nearby national parks, offering a memorable blend of history, nature, and tranquillity.
