Black Gate Reserve, Bruinbun NSW

Black Gate Reserve is another of the legendary free camping spots scattered along the historic and challenging Bridle Track, offering a rugged escape for the adventurous 4WD explorer. This remote campground provides a complete immersion in the wild beauty of the Turon River valley, a landscape steeped in the history of the 1850s gold rush. Accessing this serene spot is a significant part of the adventure, requiring a high-clearance 4WD to navigate the steep, narrow, and often rough sections of the track. This demanding journey ensures that Black Gate Reserve remains a peaceful and untouched sanctuary for those who are well-prepared for a genuine off-road experience.

This is the epitome of primitive, self-sufficient bush camping. The reserve offers a beautiful, natural clearing on the riverbank, but there are absolutely no facilities—no toilets, no bins, no tables, and no water. It is a destination exclusively for campers who are fully self-contained and who understand and respect the ‘leave no trace’ philosophy, taking everything they bring in back out with them. A portable toilet is mandatory. Like the other reserves along this track, a major benefit is that it’s pet-friendly, allowing dogs to enjoy the riverside freedom.

The Turon River is the heart of the experience, offering crystal-clear swimming holes, excellent trout fishing, and the exciting possibility of finding a fleck of gold while fossicking. The campground is surrounded by the ghosts of the gold rush era, and the sense of history is palpable. Evenings are perfect for a campfire by the river, with the profound silence of the bush and a spectacular canopy of stars creating an unforgettable outback atmosphere. For a free, rugged, and historically rich adventure, Black Gate Reserve is an exceptional choice for the experienced explorer.
