Hungry Gate campground, Hat Head NSW
For those who truly want to get away from it all and immerse themselves in the wild beauty of the coast, Hungry Gate campground is a spectacular choice. Tucked away in the magnificent Hat Head National Park, this is a secluded, walk-in campground designed for the self-sufficient nature lover. The experience begins at the carpark, where you’ll need to carry your gear along a short 50-metre track to the campground, a small effort that guarantees a peaceful and vehicle-free environment. The campground itself is a beautiful, sheltered clearing set amongst coastal heathland and banksia trees, offering a genuine back-to-nature escape just a short stroll from the pristine and often deserted Hungry Beach.
This is a classic, primitive National Parks bush camp where the stunning natural environment is the main attraction. The facilities are basic, consisting of a non-flushing toilet, reflecting the campground’s rustic and off-grid character. Self-reliance is essential; campers must bring all their own drinking water and supplies, and are required to take all their rubbish home to preserve the pristine condition of the park. The reward for this preparation is an incredibly peaceful and private stay. You will fall asleep to the sound of the ocean and wake to a chorus of native honeyeaters and fantails.
The location is a paradise for adventurers. The nearby beach is perfect for fishing, surfing, and long, meditative walks. The campground is also a key point on the Connors Beach walking track, a spectacular coastal hike that offers breathtaking views, especially during whale watching season. The surrounding heathland erupts into a stunning display of wildflowers in the spring. While it feels incredibly remote, the charming village of Hat Head is just a short drive away for basic supplies. For a serene and beautiful coastal wilderness experience, Hungry Gate is an exceptional choice. Bookings are essential.
