For the dedicated adventurer seeking a true wilderness escape on the Clarence Coast, Boorkoom campground is a secluded paradise. Tucked away in the magnificent Yuraygir National Park, this stunning campground offers an immersive back-to-nature experience on the banks of the pristine Wooli Wooli River. It is a destination that rewards effort, as reaching the campground requires either a 1-kilometre walk from the nearest car park, carrying all your gear, or paddling in by canoe or kayak. This remote access is the key to its charm, ensuring a peaceful and undisturbed stay far from the noise and crowds of vehicle-accessible sites.
This is a classic bush camp for the fully self-sufficient hiker or paddler. The campground itself is a series of beautiful, grassy clearings set amongst towering paperbark and eucalyptus trees, providing a serene and picturesque environment. The only facility is a non-flushing toilet, meaning campers must be completely self-reliant, bringing in all food, shelter, and drinking water, and packing out every single piece of rubbish. The Wooli Wooli River is the heart of the experience, its calm, tea-tree-stained waters are perfect for a refreshing swim, fishing for bass, or launching a multi-day paddling adventure.
The campground is a haven for wildlife. You are almost guaranteed to be visited by kangaroos and wallabies, and the area is a hotspot for birdwatching, with majestic sea eagles often seen soaring overhead. The surrounding park offers fantastic opportunities for bushwalking, including sections of the epic Yuraygir coastal walk.
