Larni Yirrip Campground, Big Hill VIC
Escape to the serene beauty of the Box-Ironbark forest at Larni Yirrip Campground, a stunning bush retreat nestled within the Greater Bendigo National Park. Meaning ‘Birds of the Forest’ in the language of the Dja Dja Wurrung people, this campground truly lives up to its name, offering a peaceful immersion in nature where the soundtrack is the rich chorus of native birdlife. It’s a beautifully designed and relatively new Parks Victoria site that provides a fantastic back-to-basics camping experience for those looking to disconnect from the city, which is remarkably just a short 15-minute drive away. The campground is set amongst the towering gums, with well-spaced, designated sites that offer a good degree of privacy.
This is a campground for the self-sufficient nature lover. The facilities are simple but clean and well-maintained, consisting of non-flushing toilets and communal fire pits that become a wonderful social hub on cool evenings. Campers must come fully prepared, bringing all their own drinking water and taking all rubbish home, following the ‘leave no trace’ principles that help preserve this beautiful environment. Each campsite is a level, gravel pad, making it suitable for tents, camper trailers, and small caravans or motorhomes that are comfortable on unsealed roads.
The location is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Larni Yirrip serves as a fantastic base for exploring the extensive network of walking tracks and challenging mountain bike trails that wind through the surrounding national park. The park is renowned for its significant gold rush history, beautiful spring wildflower displays, and abundant wildlife, including kangaroos and wallabies. Its proximity to the historic city of Bendigo is a major advantage, allowing campers to easily access the city’s famous attractions, such as the Central Deborah Gold Mine and Bendigo Art Gallery, before retreating to the tranquillity of the bush. Bookings are essential for this popular and peaceful getaway.
