Bowenville Reserve Free Camp Wainui QLD
Bowenville Reserve is a hugely popular and highly-regarded free camp, perfectly situated on the expansive banks of Oakey Creek in the heart of the Darling Downs. This vast reserve offers a fantastic bush camping experience with ample space for all types of travellers, from those in large motorhomes and caravans to tent campers seeking a tranquil spot by the water. The campground is spread across a massive, mostly flat area, providing a wide choice of sites. You can opt for a prime waterfront position to easily launch a kayak or cast a fishing line, or find a more secluded spot nestled under the shade of the plentiful gum trees. Its beautiful natural setting, combined with its reputation as a water-sports haven, makes it a bustling and social hub, especially on weekends and during school holidays, while still being large enough to find your own peace and quiet.
The main attraction is Oakey Creek, which is often wide and deep enough for boating, water skiing, and fishing, with Golden Perch (Yellowbelly) and Murray Cod being the target species. A concrete boat ramp provides easy access to the water. While this is largely a self-sufficient camp, Toowoomba Regional Council provides basic but well-maintained amenities, including flushing toilets and rubbish bins, which are a significant bonus for a free site. There is no potable water, however, so visitors must bring their own supplies. The generous 3-week maximum stay allows for a proper break to relax and explore the surrounding region, including the nearby towns of Dalby and Jondaryan, with Toowoomba also within easy reach for a day trip. For its beautiful location, recreational opportunities, and excellent community support, Bowenville Reserve is deservedly one of the best free camps in southern Queensland.
