Betoota Free Camp (Dreamtime Serpent) – Birdsville QLD

Camping at Betoota offers one of the most unique and atmospheric experiences in the Australian outback. As Australia’s smallest town (with a official population of zero), this ghost town provides a vast, silent, and starkly beautiful landscape for fully self-sufficient travellers. Located roughly halfway between Windorah and Birdsville on the Diamantina Developmental Road, Betoota is a place of history, solitude, and surprising creativity. The free camping area is essentially the entire town common; a wide, open expanse of red earth where you can pull up anywhere and claim your own piece of the Channel Country. The sense of isolation is profound, and the night sky, free from any light pollution, is absolutely spectacular. It’s a place to truly disconnect and soak in the immense scale of the outback.

While the town is uninhabited for 364 days of the year, its spirit is far from gone. The main attraction is the iconic Betoota Hotel, which famously throws open its doors for the annual Betoota Races, bringing the town roaring back to life. For the rest of the year, it stands as a silent monument to a bygone era. A key highlight for campers is the magnificent ‘Dreamtime Serpent’ art installation, a massive sculpture created from recycled metal that snakes its way across the landscape near the town. It’s a powerful and impressive piece of art that adds a surreal touch to the remote setting. As a completely primitive campsite, there are absolutely no facilities. Visitors must bring everything they need—water, food, fuel, power, and their own toilet—and strictly adhere to ‘leave no trace’ principles. Camping at Betoota is a genuine adventure, rewarding the prepared traveller with an unforgettable experience of outback history, art, and solitude.
