Sam Creek – Old Telegraph Track QLD Free Camp

Sam Creek is a true gem of the Old Telegraph Track (OTT) and is widely regarded as one of the most picturesque and enjoyable campsites on the entire Cape York Peninsula. While many stops on the OTT are defined by their challenging crossings, Sam Creek is celebrated for its stunning natural beauty and its incredible swimming hole. The campsite is a spacious, dusty clearing nestled in the bush right beside the creek, offering a welcome and scenic spot to rest after a hard day on the tracks. It’s a place where the dust-covered convoys of 4WDs pull in, and the weary occupants quickly transform into relaxed swimmers, floating in the cool, clear waters. The highlight is undoubtedly the small waterfall that cascades over a smooth rock ledge into a deep, inviting pool below. This natural spa is the perfect antidote to the heat, dust, and mechanical stresses of the journey.

The creek crossing at Sam Creek, while not as deep or intimidating as some others on the northern OTT, still demands respect. It features a steep, rocky entry and exit that requires careful wheel placement and a steady nerve. Camping here allows travellers to watch the action and plan their own approach. Like all the camps along the track, Sam Creek is a completely primitive, self-sufficient campsite. There are absolutely no facilities—no toilets, no water, no power, and no bins. Visitors must bring everything they need to survive and are required to leave the site exactly as they found it, packing out all of their rubbish. The combination of a challenging track, the remote wilderness setting, and the sheer beauty of the location makes a stop at Sam Creek a non-negotiable and unforgettable highlight of any Old Telegraph Track adventure.
