Canal Creek – Old Telegraph Track QLD Free Camp

Canal Creek is one of the most talked-about crossings and campsites on the northern section of the legendary Old Telegraph Track (OTT) in Cape York. This spot is the embodiment of the OTT’s reputation: challenging, remote, and incredibly rewarding. The campsite is a primitive bush camp set in a clearing right next to the infamous creek crossing itself. It’s not a destination for the faint of heart; reaching it requires navigating the rugged tracks of the OTT, and leaving often involves conquering one of its deeper and more technical water crossings. The atmosphere here is thick with adventure. It’s a place where 4WD enthusiasts gather, inspect the formidable crossing, share intel on track conditions, and swap stories of their journey so far. There are no designated sites, so campers find a spot in the dusty clearing, set up their swags or rooftop tents, and soak in the raw wilderness of the Cape.

The main feature is, without doubt, the creek. Canal Creek is notorious for its deep, murky water and the submerged logs that shift throughout the season, making every crossing a unique challenge. Most travellers will spend considerable time walking the crossing, probing its depths with a stick, and planning their line before attempting to drive it. Camping here provides the perfect opportunity to watch others tackle this obstacle, offering a mix of high-stakes entertainment and valuable learning. Like all camps along the OTT, Canal Creek is completely without facilities. There are no toilets, no water taps, and no rubbish bins. It is a true self-sufficient experience that demands respect for the environment. All campers must bring everything they need and adhere strictly to ‘leave no trace’ principles to preserve this iconic location for future adventurers. It’s a tough, genuine, and unforgettable part of the Cape York pilgrimage.
