Coen Creek Free Camp Area – Coen QLD

The Coen Creek Free Camp is an iconic and essential stop for anyone undertaking the epic journey up the Peninsula Developmental Road to Cape York. Located on the southern side of the remote town of Coen, this large, informal bush camp stretches along the sandy banks of the Coen River, offering a welcome respite for dusty and weary travellers. Its popularity stems from its convenience, its scenic setting, and the simple fact that it’s one of the best free options in a very remote part of Australia. The campground is a sprawling area of dirt and sand, dotted with shady trees that offer some relief from the tropical sun. There’s no designated sites; travellers simply pull in and find a spot that suits them, creating a social and communal atmosphere, especially during the peak Dry Season (from May to October).

This is a true bush camp, and visitors must be largely self-sufficient. The only provided facility is a very basic long-drop toilet block. There is no power, no potable water, and no rubbish collection, so it’s essential to bring everything you need and to take all your waste with you. The sandy riverbed and banks can be soft, so while it’s accessible to 2WD vehicles with care, 4WD is recommended, particularly if you want to find a more secluded spot further along the creek. The camp’s proximity to Coen is a major advantage, allowing for refuelling, picking up basic supplies, or enjoying a cold beer and a meal at the famous Exchange Hotel (the Coen Pub). For those heading north, it’s the perfect place to rest and prepare for the next challenging leg of the Cape York adventure.
