Cockatoo Camping Ground, also known as site number 9, is another fantastic free camping destination within the celebrated Wellington River camping corridor near Licola. This large, open, and grassy site is a favourite for its easy access and beautiful setting, making it a perfect spot for campers of all kinds. The well-maintained Tamboritha Road leads right to the campground, meaning it’s easily accessible for 2WD vehicles, caravans, campervans, and large motorhomes. The site offers ample space, allowing groups to spread out and find their own corner of this High Country paradise, with the gentle sounds of the Wellington River flowing just metres away.The campground is a hub of activity, especially on weekends and holidays. The clear, cool waters of the river provide a perfect escape from the summer heat and are ideal for swimming, fishing for trout, and floating on a lilo. The surrounding area is part of the Alpine National Park, showcasing a stunning landscape of tall forests and rugged mountains, with plenty of opportunities for informal bushwalks. One of the key features of this camping corridor is its unique dog-friendly status within a national park, allowing pets to join the family adventure provided they are kept on a leash.
