Vennells Camping Ground – Free Riverside Camping Big River State Forest

Discover one of the Big River State Forest’s most popular free campsites at Vennells Camping Ground, located near Eildon, Victoria. This large, open, and grassy area is set right on the banks of the Big River, offering a fantastic and accessible bush camping experience for families, groups, and 4WD tourers. Unlike some of the more rugged sites in the area, Vennells is relatively easy to get to, making it a great base for exploring the Victorian High Country. The campground itself is a large, flat clearing shaded by tall native trees, providing ample space for tents, camper trailers, and off-road vans.

The site is a haven for those who enjoy water-based activities. The Big River provides excellent opportunities for fishing, with trout being a common catch in these waters. On warmer days, the river is also a popular spot for swimming and kayaking. Being pet-friendly, it’s an ideal spot to bring your dog along for the adventure, provided they remain on a leash. Access is via Big River Road, which is an all-weather gravel road suitable for most vehicles, though a 4WD or all-wheel-drive is recommended, especially after rain or if you plan to explore the surrounding forest tracks.

Vennells is a free campground with basic facilities, so campers must be self-sufficient. There are non-flush (pit) toilets available, but you must bring your own drinking water and firewood. Open campfires are permitted in the designated fire pits, but always check and adhere to local fire restrictions and Total Fire Ban days. As a “leave no trace” area, there are no rubbish bins, so you must take all your rubbish with you. With no mobile phone reception, this is the perfect opportunity to disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature in a beautiful riverside setting.
